The Original Cyndi began its life as the studio project of recording engineer
and Memphis native Justinedward, a veteran of several local bands. At
it's inception, Justinedward sought the services of Jonathan and Fred Kelly,
of the Knoxville power-pop band the Rockwells, to help develop his musical
vision, best described as "glam/garage rock" (i.e. a shameless
ripoff of T. Rex and mid-60s Stones). These circa-2001 recordings were shelved
for a few years in an effort towards premature maturation.
"You know, dropping out of college and a full time job and relationship
and stuff."
As time went on, marriages turned to divorces, and horses being horses, what
went around came to come all over the place. Over time, Justinedward began
to develop even more new material.
"My attention span had vastly shortened, due to a change in medication and
a job in a call center, mayhaps. There was a computer-based studio in the attic.
I'm no expert on attics, but I am computer literate. I attribute it all to the
VIC-20. It could have been Number Munchers, though."
These newer songs had less of an emphasis on celebratory rock revisionism and
more of an objective slant.
"You know, like, body odor, getting a vasectommy [sic], contemplating world
revolution from the comforts of the porcelain throne, et. al"
Unfortunately, Justinedward had lost his original backing band in the great college
malaise purge of 2003. Enter good friend and collaborator J.D. Reager, a veteran
of countless local bands including his own, J.D. Reager and the Cold-Blooded
Three.
"Basically, he lit the fire in my soul, as well as the one under my ass."
Justinedward dug out his box of makeup, his best evening gown, and several contacts
made in the studio biz, including Eric Wilson and Ryan Proctor from the band
Ursa, and Joey Pegram, who handles drums in about a million bands, as well as
being a talented songwriter in his own right for the band Shabbadoo. The album,
entitled "the Power Without the Price" (in reference to the first computer
to have a MIDI port, the Atari ST), is a synthesis of old and new, and stands
as a testament to Justinedward's disappointment with the 21st century. The live
show, and all its insanity, is coming in the theatre of you!
